What is Glucose and how does it affect weight gain/ weight loss?
- Glucose is the main type of sugar that our bodies use for fuel.
- So whilst some glucose is not great for our bodies, and too much of it certainly isn’t, there is a time and a place for it in our diets
- Refined sugars, that products like Ice Cream, Chocolate etc, have no nutritional value, they can cause your body to store extra fat and also make your brain crave even more sugar.
- Sugars that come in fruit are perfectly fine in moderation and at the correct times *Whilst fruits contain vital vitamins for our bodies, it is still glucose which could still cause our bodies to have glucose spikes
Here are 6 simple ideas to implement around your eating habits to help balance the glucose spikes in your body
What is blood glucose? And how do spikes in blood glucose lead to health issues?
- Blood Glucose, is simply the amount of glucose/sugars in our blood stream.
- If you exercise after eating then your body will use the glucose in the blood as energy and this will reduce your blood glucose levels and glucose spikes.
- If you do not use the energy immediately then your body will release insulin which will take the glucose out of the blood and deposit it in the muscles and liver (they act like a storage tank)
- Problems arise when there is too much glucose in the blood stream, or your ”storage tank” is already full.
- If your body can not get rid of the excess glucose, then it will be transported to your fat cells and then they will store it as fat.
